Disney-Pixar’s animated feature “Soul” leads the local box office in advance ticket sales, suggesting that Koreans are desperate for feel-good escapism this grim coronavirus winter.
The film sold 37,732 tickets as of Monday morning ahead of its release on Wednesday, accounting for 51.2 percent of total advance sales, according to the Korean Film Council.
The animation raises hopes of a small boost for movie theaters that have been devastated by the epidemic.
“Soul” is about a music teacher who dreams of playing the piano in New York’s top jazz club. When he has an accident, his soul is separated from his body and he finds himself in a world where unborn souls stay and learns an uplifting life lesson that will bring a tear to all but the most jaded eye.
